Looking around, we find a plethora of jobs and positions available in the IT industry. Picking the right one for you is a mammoth decision. Since in the absence of any previous experience in computing, in what way could we be expected to know what a particular job actually consists of? To attack this, there should be a discussion of a number of definitive areas:

- The sort of person you reckon you are - the tasks that you get enjoyment from, plus of course - what makes you unhappy.

- Are you driven to get qualified for a particular motive - i.e. is it your goal to work from home (being your own boss?)?

- Is the money you make further up on your priority-scale than some other areas.

- Learning what the main career areas and markets are - and what makes them different.

- How much time you'll have available to spend on the training program.

For the majority of us, sifting through so much data will require meeting with an advisor that has direct industry experience. And we don't just mean the accreditations - you also need to understand the commercial requirements and expectations of industry too.

Technology and IT is one of the more exciting and ground-breaking industries to be involved in today. To be working on the cutting-edge of technology means you're a part of the huge progress affecting everyone who lives in the 21st century. Many people are of the opinion that the technological revolution we have experienced is easing off. There is no truth in this at all. We have yet to experience incredible advances, and most especially the internet will be the biggest thing to affect the way we live.

And don't forget salaries moreover - the average salary across the UK for an average IT worker is a lot more than the national average. It's likely you'll bring in a whole lot more than you could reasonably hope to get in other industries. Excitingly, there is no end in sight for IT sector development in Great Britain as a whole. The leading database systems being used worldwide are MS 'SQL' Server and 'Oracle'. Quite a few big installations still use the older Oracle System, but nevertheless 'SQL' Server is now the favourite System in most business environments, & as far as web based Databases go it rules the roost. Since Microsoft own the SQL Server technology, it has been conveniently incorporated in to all of their platforms and programming languages, which makes it an obvious choice for all those planning to acquire qualification & professional recognition. The earlier Database program 'Microsoft Certified Database Administrator' ('MCDBA') has now been succeeded with the Microsoft Certified IT Professional ('MCITP') & the 'Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist' (MCTS). Whilst SQL Server '08 is now starting to gain some foothold, the current prevalent commercial version of MS SQL Server is 2005, & it's this edition that features in the MCITP DBA accreditation. Similar to other Microsoft accreditations, a number of 'MCTS' modules come before the complete 'MCITP' accreditation.

Most of us would love to think that our careers will remain safe and our future is protected, but the growing reality for most jobs around England at the moment is that security just isn't there anymore. Wherever we find escalating skills shortfalls together with escalating demand however, we generally find a newly emerging type of market-security; where, fuelled by conditions of continuous growth, organisations are struggling to hire the number of people required.

The computing Industry skills deficit across Great Britain falls in at roughly 26 percent, as reported by a recent e-Skills study. Showing that for each four job positions that are available across computing, we have only 3 certified professionals to perform that task. Properly taught and commercially accredited new employees are correspondingly at a total premium, and in all likelihood it will stay that way for a long time. It would be hard to imagine if a better time or market state of affairs could exist for getting trained into this swiftly expanding and budding market.
